Football Helmet cake

I used one cake mix box for this 6" football helmet cake. I used a small dome pan (the inside pan from the Betty Crocker Bake n' Fill set) and 6" round pan to make this. I stacked the dome shape on top of the flat round layer, putting a layer of icing in between,

To carve out the the helmet shape, I simply cut about 2 inches off the bottom layer. I frosted it with regular vanilla canned frosting which I'm not used to. That's why it's not so smooth! I prefer making my own buttercream, but obviously, store-bought is doable.

I colored fondant and cut out the team's logo for both sides of the helmet. Then I piped an outline on the logo using frosting. I used colored drinking straws for the face mask, snipping notches into the straw in the places I wanted it to bend and stuck them into the cake. You can use toothpicks to secure it.

For a larger helmet, you can use the larger dome pan with an 8" round pan for the bottom layer.
