Homemade Garden Tools Cake

This Garden Tools Cake was for my Mother-in-Law's birthday. It was my first fondant cake I've ever made (my daughter helped with the decorations). I made my own marshmallow fondant myself. I really like the taste of the fondant, but had some issues covering the cake.

Being a newbie, I'm not sure if I used too much icing on the cake before applying the fondant or it was the way I made the fondant. Gotta say it was a learning experience and I'm looking forward to my next one! The flower pot was a muffin covered in fondant. The gloves and shovel were both fondant. The flowers, grass and accents were all buttercream.

I don't know what your issue was with the fondant, but here is some tricks I've learned when using homemade fondant.
First when icing the cake, do just enough where the crumbs won't show. More if Chocolate less if yellow and scrap off as much as you can so you can't see it. It's ok if you see crumbs in the icing you just don't want chunks of cake showing. After icing it cool it for a few hours. I have been known to put it in the freezer to hurry it up. you just don't want it frozen. That will cause the fondant to freeze and when it thaws to crack.

Second I have a problem with the icing sticking to my center when rolling it out so I do it between to sheets of parchment paper. This helps with transferring too.

I hope this helps.
