Homemade Gift Box Cake
I made this gift box cake for my friend's mom's 50th birthday party. The decorations were all in red, black, purple, and turquoise but since I couldn't figure out how to make turquoise with food paste I left that color out.
This is my second fondant cake and I used marshmallow fondant instead of the Wilton brand. I've heard from multiple people that it tastes much better and is easier to work with. I had to make two batches of fondant because the cake was so large.
The cake is actually 7 different cakes. The bottom striped gift box is four separate 9x13 cakes, two 2-layer cakes sitting next to each other. I then frosted them as if they were one cake, and added the fondant. The top polka dot gift box is three 8 in. square cakes, stacked on top of each other. Instead of splitting the batter between two 8 in. pans, I used it all in just one pan, so each layer is a full cake.
I had a real hard time with the black fondant, possibly because of the large amount of food coloring I had to use, it kept breaking on me. I had to cover up several holes with polka dots. The ribbons, bow, and 50 are also fondant, I made them a couple of days ahead of time so they could dry, and actually were still very wet. I had to put them in front of a fan for most of the second day to dry them.
Over all it turned out pretty good, everyone liked it.
