Homemade Graduation Cake

I made this Graduation Cake for my best friend's sons high school graduation. I started with two 9 x 13" cakes and one 6" round. I iced the round cake in chocolate icing and the "books" in butter cream tinted blue and orange leaving three sides not iced. I then placed wooden dowels, cut to size in to bottom layer.

The top cake was placed on a cake board cut to exact size so it wouldn't show. The subjects were iced with a #2 round tip and white butter cream. I then placed three wooden dowels in the center top of the middle layer and a cake board under the cap, again cut to exact size. The top of the cap was made by freezing melted milk chocolate chips in a zipper freezer bag until hard. The tassels were made from licorice that was knotted and attached with more chocolate icing.

I then made the pages with a basket weaving tip and white butter cream. I finished the cap with a boarder using a star tip and chocolate icing. This cake was a huge success at his party and I already have plans for one after college.
