Homemade Guitar Birthday Cake
I made this Guitar Birthday Cake for my Mother-in-Law's 70th Birthday. I have made many celebration cakes but this is the first guitar-shaped cake I have tried.
I made an 8" round, a 6" round and a 6" square cake, then cut and shaped them together. I brushed some orange jam onto the surface and covered it with sugar paste, which I coloured using food colouring paste (making a 'wood' grain by adding some darker brown and not blending it in completely). I made the butterflies from sugar paste and painted patterns on them with a fine brush.
After I had piped the strings, the fun started! When I moved the cake onto a table the strings broke into little pieces as the two boards I had joined together were not quite level.
I had to redo the strings which was a bit of a pain.
I used a large storage box to transport the cake and luckily it reached the party without any strings breaking!
