Homemade Guitar Cake

I made this guitar cake for my brother's 14th birthday. I used strawberry cake mix from the local grocery store, and had the bakery make the black and silver frosting for me (it was butter cream flavored).

I free-handed the shape of his guitar onto a piece of parchment paper with sharpie, and cut out the figure.

I had to make two cakes in a normal sized, rectangular cake pan. In total I used three boxes of cake mix so that the cakes would rise above the top of the pan so I could cut the tops of the cakes off to make the even and level, as well as the ends of the cakes so I could put them together, end to end.

I put the design of the guitar on top of the cakes after they cooled and cut around it.

I iced it and decorated it according to how his guitar looked.
