Homemade Guitar Cake

This is an electric guitar cake modeled after a Les Paul. I used many of the photos from this website to get ideas. I am by no means a good baker or decorator, so I was pretty proud! This was for my son's 5th "rock star" themed birthday party. He has a play guitar that was the perfect size, so I traced that on paper and cut it out to make a template.

I used one 9x13 (chocolate) cake for the base and one (yellow) cake for the neck. The knobs are upside down peanut butter cups, the toggle switch a mike-n-ike, the tuners gumdrops, the strings dental floss (licorice strings just wouldn't sit right). We first just tried using McCormick's food coloring, but the icing stayed so light, so my mom found some unopened Wilton color dyes she had and that helped a little, though I have no idea how everyone else on this site made brown for the neck, this yellowish peach was the best I could do!

The kids (and moms) all ooohed and aaaahed at the cake, it was a huge hit!
