I made this guitar cake for my daughter’s 6th birthday party. I used the “heavenly white cake recipe” I found online along with a buttercream icing recipe I found online (I used the recipe because I was looking for a frosting that would crust).

To make the cake I used 3 9×13 pans. After baking the cakes I let them cool and then put them in the freezer for about 30 minutes, the freezing helped with the cutting. I used my fender guitar and parchment paper and traced it out. I then placed the traced paper on top of the 9×13 cakes and used tooth picks to hold the pattern in place. Using a serrated knife I carved out the pieces (all together the cake was 3 pieces).

Then to frost the cake and give it the Fondant look with out the fondant taste I put a thin layer of frosting on the cake and let it sit about 15 minutes. I then put on a second layer getting it as smooth as possible and let it sit again until it crusted (it wouldn’t stick to my fingers when I touched it). Using my fingers and a paper towel I gently smoothed out the edges giving the cake the smooth fondant look.

Everything on the cake is edible. I just used frosting to make it all. I opted to not put any “strings” on the guitar for fear of taking away from it.

Not only did everyone love the look, they also loved the taste! :) This cake took me a total of 9 hours to complete. I by no means am a cake maker. This is only my 2nd ever attempt to make a cake by “carving” out the shape. And my first ever attempt at making a white birthday cake and frosting from scratch. It was a blast though and well worth the time!
