Z's Gumball Machine Cake

Z's Gumball Machine Cake

This Gumball Machine cake is an original creation I made for my son Zayden's 5th Birthday. The day he was officially allowed to start chewing gum!

I made the base of the machine from a cake baked in a 9x13 pan - trimmed to shape. I baked the bubble top cake in a Pyrex bowl. Tip: It took quite a long time to cook through - make sure center is set or it would cave in. I paced a third piece - a small 1/2 circle at the top.

I iced with regular buttercream frosting and used fondant in bright primary colours to shape little *gumballs*. I also used the fondant rolled into thin lines to outline the shape the edges and the gumball slot. I was at a loss as to what to use for the money dial but finally found a bike lock key - perfect!

good thinking
by: Kelly

I would not have considered the mayhem that could come from chewing gum at a birthday party--probably was the better choice to steer clear...
I would have used real gumballs and then found gum stuck on everything for 3 days following the party! :)

Why didn't I use real gum?
by: Tanya

The question was asked - why not use real gum?
I considered it - but the idea of chewing gum and cake together was not appealing. And sticky, licked off gumballs seemed yucky too!

Plus dealing with 12 kids chewing gum was overwhelming to me. Besides, the fondant worked really well.

Inventive!

What a cute idea! Could you not have used real gumballs? Was there a reason you didn't? Awesome idea!
