Homemade Handy Manny Toolbox Cake

My son requested a Handy Manny Toolbox cake for his latest birthday and so I attempted it.

I made two 11x15 cakes, cut them in half and stacked three of the halves to make the rectangle box. I then iced the three layers together with buttercream icing. The handle was made out of rice krispie squares (which were also iced in the buttercream and were not easy to do!) and a red plastic pipe.

My son had received the Manny and tool figurines at Christmas, so I used them on the top of the cake.

This was definitely one of the easier character cakes I have created.

Hey, my nephews 1st Birthday is coming up and he loves Handy Manny. I needed ideas on how to do his cake that his mother (my sister)asked me to do for his party. Thanks for the help!

We did come up with using Rice Krispy Treats for the side panel and then using fondant to keep it tacked onto the cake. We got a large doll rod for the handle and will be covering it with fondant. The rest of the cake will be regular white cake, with fondant.

I was wondering about what to put it on, one of the others who made a comment, gave the idea of a board to look like a piece of wood, Fabulous idea. Thanks to all!!

I made this cake for my twin boys 2nd birthday! It was great! For the handle, I used a wooden dowel and painted it bright red! It was the easiest thing to use! What a great idea, thanks for posting.

Cake was awesome! Copied off your idea and wish I would of read your comment on how to make the shape! We ended up using 4 load pans! and stacked two on top of each other! I had 17 people to feed! Thanks for the idea!

I loved this idea, so I adapted it and made my own toolbox cake for my son's 3rd birthday this past weekend. The toys can be bought at the Disney Store or disneystore.com for $12.50. I used Americolor Red Red to color the icing (Wilton's butter cream recipe). You get a nice red color without the bitter taste. Remember that the icing will dry darker than it appears when you first mix it. I used a 9x13 pan and cut it in half longways and then trimmed about 2 inches off each piece to use as the side supports. You get a smaller cake this way, but it was plenty big enough for the 15 people I fed, and we have leftovers. Use a bamboo skewer to hold each support as you ice it and then push the skewer all the way through the support and the main cake to attach it. I could not find red pipe or tubing to use as a handle, so I finally settled on red construction paper! Put a skewer between the two supports and loosely wrap a strip of construction paper around it and secure with tape. You can only get about 3 of the character pieces on the cake, so I just put the rest around the front of the cake. I actually added a wide stripe of brown icing around the cake to make it look like it was sitting on wood, and I placed the toys on that. I also used the "Happy Birthday" icing candies on the front of the cake. I hope this helps anyone else trying to duplicate this cute cake!

you can wrap a white pipe with pen candy string may need icing to hold them on the pipe. Also may want to put it in the freezer, for as long as possible, to set.

I desperately needed inspiration for my daughter's 3rd birthday party tomorrow and I found this and emulated it.

I couldn't find any tubing though so cellotaped a couple of chopsticks together and then rolled that in red royal icing.

It is a great idea because then they have the characters to play with after (if like me you bought them for the cake)

I think you can get the toppers at Walmart/Target and I saw them on eBay. I am making the cake on Wed, I will let you know how it goes. I am having a hard time finding a red pipe. I found a white one but I really don't want to paint it. Does anyone have any ideas?
