Homemade Hello Kitty Birthday Cake

Homemade Hello Kitty Birthday Cake

This Hello Kitty birthday cake was baked in a 12" square cake pan. After removing the cake from the pan, I placed it in the freezer for an hour or so to firm it up temporarily for easy sculpting.

I found a picture online of Hello Kitty and enlarged it to 12" wide. It didn't all print on one page, so I taped the sections of the photo together and then cut it out. I secured this template to the cake with a few toothpicks to hold it in place as I cut around the outline. I then applied a crumb coat and after allowing it to crust, I relaid the template and put toothpicks through it into the cake to mark the location of the eyes and nose.

Working around the toothpicks, I then frosted with buttercream, allowed it to crust and smoothed it out. Black jelly beans were used for the eyes and a yellow one for the nose. The bow is made of red gumdrops rolled out in granulated sugar and formed into a bow.

The whiskers are made of black licorice. I couldn't find the pull-apart smooth stringy kind I wanted so I had to use the textured kind, which worked out better and I would recommend because it was stiffer than the stringy licorice is. I cut them lengthwise into thirds, discarding the center piece and turning the end pieces rounded side up.

I hope this information will help anyone who wishes to make a Hello Kitty cake, but if you have any questions I can help you with, please leave a comment and I will assist you as best I can.

Bow

Letty, the bow is actually made of three pieces - the two ends and the center strip. Put a handful of red gumdrops on top of a thin layer of granulated sugar and use a rolling pin to both flatten them and make them stick to each other so they form a sheet. You may have to flip it a few times to get a nice coating of sugar on both sides to keep it from sticking. Three smaller sheets are easier to make than one big one. For each of the two end pieces, fold the rough edges under to form a rectangle with rounded corners, then pinch one end to make the pleat in the bow. For the middle piece, cut a strip from the gumdrop sheet and fold each long side under. Now put the two pleated edges of the bow end pieces together and wrap the center strip around them, having the middle strip's seam on the bottom so you don't see it. You could probably use a fruit roll-up instead of gumdrops if you want. Cut out two rectangles and a strip and continue as described above.
