Homemade Hello Kitty Birthday Cake

I made this Hello Kitty Birthday cake for my daughter's 3rd birthday. I got the idea for this cake from this website, but I decided this would be my first try at fondant. I was really happy with how it turned out. The fondant took a few attempts to get it on the bottom layer (I did it in 3 sections) but I didn't stress and kept playing with it.

I made the fondant from a marshmallow recipe I found on-line. The cake itself was just a box mix and I used the technique of another cake submission on this website. I used an 11 x 15 bottom pan and then two (2) 8" round pans for the Hello Kitty. I cut one of the rounds in half and the other in three strips. I took the middle strip and placed it in between the two halves of the other round to make an oval.

Then I made ears out of the remaining strips of cake. I gave the entire cake a base coat of buttercream icing, then I draped the fondant over that. I colored the fondant pink for the bottom half with Wilton Pink.

I made the eyes and nose out of fondant, just colored it with Wilton coloring. I also made the whiskers with fondant that I wrapped around toothpicks, then I stuck them under the fondant and smoothed the whiskers down to cover the insertion holes.

The cake was a hit with my daughter and family. A good addition to the Hello Kitty theme.
