Coolest Hello Kitty Cake

This was for my daughter’s 4th birthday. I had ordered a Hello Kitty cake tin but it never arrived in time so I took the nerve-wracking step of constructing HK’s form from white layer cakes.

I used two white layer cakes using this recipe…

They were perfect – really yummy and great to cut and work with. I kept one layer whole and used a photocopy of Hello Kitty’s head to cut out the shape from the other cake. I placed that on top, then I crumb coated the whole thing in buttercream using this great recipe… (especially great if you really want a good, bright white).

After tinting the frosting I then began piping the top white part first, using a star-shaped tip, then the pink part, and lastly the bow. To mark where the bow was I cut the bow out of the original image I cut around and placed in on the cake so I could pipe around it. When I was ready to apply the purple I peeled the bow off and piped in the space.

I finished it off with some liqourice straps for details. I used a Wilton black gel pen to fill in the liqourice border for the eyes and a yellow one to fill in the liquorice straps that made the border for the nose.

Just before serving I wrote my daughter’s name and “Hello Kitty!” down the sides of the serving board, and added candles.

  1. My 2yr old daughter, Quinlynne, has fallen in love with Hello Kitty (Or as she calls her, “My Itty”) & I’ve been looking everywhere on complete how-to direction. I’m very happy to find a “from scratch” HK template. I’ve tried those cake preshaped cake pans, but they never seem to work out the way I’d like them to. I’m a give me every step kinda gal & your site really helped me understand where I need to go. I’m beginning to wonder about making little kitty cakes for each guest. Now, any help with the red Power Ranger for my son?(they both have sunner b-days so we celebrate after school year starts) I’ll probably test them both out using your technique this weekend.
