Homemade Handbag Birthday Cake
This Homemade Handbag Birthday Cake was a cake I made for a 30th Birthday. The person doesn't like fondant, so the cake is covered in homemade chocolate buttercream frosting, with some gum paste decorations.
This cake served approx 45 people. Use your favorite Devil's Food Cake Recipe. I needed 2 batches for the base cake - 14" round, then 4 more batches, 1 for each of the 9" x 13" layers. In between cake layers were filled with Raspberry Preserves.
After assembling the cake ( once it's cooled for about 3 hrs in the fridge), I crumb coated the cake, then carved the top to get the rounded effect of the bag, then back in the fridge for a few hours.
I made 2 double batches of dark chocolate buttercream frosting and 1 batch of light chocolate ( for the 'beige' look).
