Coolest Horse Birthday Cake Design

My daughter loves horses and ponies and I wanted to make her something different from what I usually make. I got the idea for this Horse Birthday Cake Design from a horse picture I drew on her bedroom wall. Firstly I baked a basic Victoria sponge mix in a baking tray. For this mixture I used 12 ounces of self-raising flour, 2 teaspoons of bi-carb, 6 eggs, 6 ounces of sugar, 12 ounces of butter and 2 tablespoons of milk.

When the cake had cooled iI then cut of the edges of the cake. While waiting for it to cool, I made up the butter icing. I used cocoa powder to make the brown icing and used green food colouring for the green. It is meant to represent grass. I would have used licorice for the horses mane but as my children don’t like it, I used cola straws instead. I used a black icing pen to do a rough outline for the main then cut the cola strips to fit inside the outline. I used black icing pen for the eye and the nostrils.

It was a lot easier than I thought and as I have never done anything like this before, I was really very pleased. It only took about 2-3 hours start to finish.

  1. Hi, what size tin was this cake made in? Could you give me the length and width of the cake tin. Also do you have a copy of the horse picture? I’m not a good drawer. Very talented thanks so much
