Coolest Hot Wheels on the Road Kids Birthday Cake 79

My ideas came mainly from others on this site so THANK YOU so much for providing this site for awesome ideas. I LOVE this site! I always go here before I start to build my cake idea. My 6 year old son wanted a Hot Wheels birthday party this year. So, I made something similar to Amy H’s Nascar Race cake on here (followed her instructions on setting up the cake).

Since this wasn’t a racing theme, I decided to use grass around the whole cake with the exception of the road and still did the figure eight. I used Wilton’s Icing recipe that a friend gave to me so it may be modified from their original recipe. I also used their brand tint as well.

I used 3 colors; green, black, and orange. I made one batch for this cake and the recipe is as follows: 1 cup Crisco shortening, 1/2 cup of water; 2 tsp of clear vanilla (clear is important to keep a true color), 1 tsp of clear butter flavoring, one 2-lb bag of powder sugar. Add 1st 4 ingredients and mix. Add 1/2 bag of the powdered sugar and mix till smooth. Then add remaining powder sugar. Mix till smooth again. When the humidity is high use a little less than 1/2 cup of water (1 or 2 tsp less).

As a tip, make your icing ahead of time. Tint the icing in separate bowls, cover and store in the fridge until ready to use (up to 2 weeks but I normally make no more than a week ahead of time). Do not use liquid food coloring because it may change your icing consistency. Also, I have found that Wilton’s tint will not change the taste of the icing no matter the amount used. Make sure you tint enough for each color because it will be difficult to get your tints to match if you have to make additional icing.

Also, freeze the cakes before cutting them to create your shape and before decorating. They won’t fall apart while you’re working with them and the crumbs will not be a problem.

I used tip #233 for the grass. I thought the grass would be tedious but it ended up being really easy and quick. Someone had suggested I use coconut with green food coloring but that just didn’t appeal to me because it’s a flavor you either love or hate and figured that 6 & 7 year old boys probably would not like it all that much but it was still an idea that could work.

On the computer, I created a billboard sign using MS Word since there wasn’t really any room to write my son’s name on the cake. I also added a speed limit sign and used his age for the speed. Both signs were glued to craft popsicle sticks. I decorated this cake on the day of his party but had the icing tinted and ready to go and the cakes baked, frozen and then shaped the day before.

He loved his homemade Hot Wheels on the Road kids birthday cake and so did the other boys who came to the party. This was by far the easiest birthday cake that I have made in a long time.

Thanks for this wonderful site and hope this helps someone else or gives them an idea for their cake in the making. I know for me it is easier to start with someone else’s masterpiece and then tweak it to suit my needs.
