Awesome Homemade How to Train Your Dragon Cake

I made this How to Train Your Dragon Cake for my son’s 8th Birthday. He just loved it! I started by making (2) 8″ rounds and (1) 13 x 9 sheet cake. I used the sheet cake for the body and tail and the rounds for the head. I stacked and carved them into the shape that I liked and crumb coated the entire cake.

I put it in the refrigerator for about a half an hour to let it set up, then added the final coat of frosting before covering the entire cake with fondant. I rolled the fondant out and used a cobblestone impression mat to give his skin a more scale-like appearance. I added some legs made out of fondant and sprayed him with yellow and green coloring. I then added the other fondant decorations (toenails, spikes, wings and eyeballs) that I had made the previous day so they would be stiff enough to work with and shaded him with some bronze luster dust to age him in certain spots.

I used some wire in his wings to help hold the shape, cut notches in the bottom with a circle cutter and used my fondant tools to add the line details. I hope you like!

  1. You’re so talented! I’m looking for a cake to make(if I dare!) for our son this month and when I saw this one, oh, how excited I am. I can’t imagine it will look nearly as good as this but it’s nice of you to put up how you did it. He wants a How To Train Your Dragon party so this is great. Anyway, thank you and keep up the awesome work! All of your cakes are awesome looking by the way I just didn’t comment on them all individually.
