Amazing Homemade Hungry Caterpillar Birthday Cake

I made this homemade Hungry Caterpillar birthday cake for my baby girl’s first birthday. I used a yellow cake mix in a bunt cake pan. I cut off the bottom of the bunt cake to make it flat and used the discarded cake to shape the head and the end of the tail. I cut the bunt cake in half and cut one of the halves in half again.

I shaved off the cake on one side to shape it into the tail. After trying and failing miserably to make my own marzipan, I used 3 packages of store bought marzipan from Wegmans (found in the baking aisle) for the icing. I cut each package in half and made four different shades of green, one of red and used the last portion of marzipan for my yellow and purple.

I rolled out the dyed marzipan between two layers of parchment paper to keep it from sticking to the rolling pin. I rolled it out to about pie crust thickness and cut it into wedge shapes to lay on the cake. I smeared the cake with apricot jam to make it stick.

I used chocolate salt water taffy to make the feet and colored tooth picks to hold them in. The colored toothpicks were also used for the spikes.
