Coolest Iggle Piggle Birthday Cake

I made this homemade Iggle Piggle birthday cake by using a basic sponge recipe. I used 5 eggs, 315g self raising flour, caster sugar and margarine and 155g plain flour and using a 12″ by 8″ cake tin.

I drew a picture of Iggle Piggle on to paper and cut out the different body shapes to use as templates on the cake. Alternatively you could download a picture from the internet.

I began by covering a 12” square cake board in sugarpaste which I had dyed green using food colouring pastes. I prefer these pastes as they give a stronger colour and are less sticky than normal food colourings. I then trimmed the crust from the cake and cut the top flat using a serrated knife. I then secured the body templates to the cake and cut out the shapes using a sharp knife.

I coloured some white sugar paste blue, gradually adding the food paste until I achieved the desired colour. First I started with the body and spread a layer of blue butter icing all over to ensure the sugar paste would stick. I rolled out some of the sugar paste larger than I needed and covered the body shape, tucking the spare icing underneath; I used a cake smoother to smooth out the icing to ensure it took the shape properly and looked neat.

I repeated this with each body part. Once they were ready I assembled them to the cake board using some butter icing.

For Iggle Piggle’s features I cut out circles for his nose and eyes, adding half circles in blue and black dots to the eyes, sticking this on to the face using sugar glue. And a black sausage shape for the mouth. I dyed some sugar paste red for the hair, feet and blanket. The hair was different sized sausage shapes, the feet were square shapes and I cut an oval like shape for the blanket. I added the stitching by piping on blue butter icing.

The homemade Iggle Piggle birthday cake was for a little girl so I wanted to make it a bit more girly and so I added some small blossom flowers around the cake board in various colours.
