Coolest Jewel from the movie Rio Cake

My 2 year old daughter loves the movie Rio, so I decided to make her the character of Jewel. I couldn’t find any cake ideas for a Jewel from the movie Rio Cake, so I looked for a colouring page that would work for a cake.

I used one cake mix box and baked it in a 9 x 13″ cake pan. I transferred the general shape from the colouring page to the cake. I dyed ready made vanilla icing blue until I got the desired colour. I frosted the whole cake except the beak and eyes. I used a small spatula to make the appearance of feathers by making small strokes starting from the bottom and working my way to the top.

I used ready made white and black frosting tubes for the eyes, beak, and outlines. The head feathers are made from blue fruit rollups wrapped around skewers and then stuck into the cake. The flower is made from a marshmallow cut in to strips, arranged into a flower, and then decorated with sprinkles and a ready made pink frosting tube.

  1. Oh my goodness thank you so much for this idea. I normally always make my daughters cakes. My oldest has wanted store bought for the last couple years and out I no where she wanted a mommy made cake again. Her birthday is Sunday and I made this cake tonight for her! You helped save the day!

  2. Thanks so much for this! My daughter loved Jewel and so I followed your instructions and made your cake for her 4th birthday today. It came out wonderfully – she loved it (and so did everyone who ate or saw it). Couldn’t have done it without you.
    Best wishes and thanks
