Homemade Knitting Bag Cake

Homemade Knitting Bag Cake

I made this homemade knitting bag cake for my Grandmother's birthday. She is an avid knitter and when I saw this idea online I knew that it was the perfect cake to make.

I started with three 8-inch round cakes; trimming them to an oval shape, layered, iced and covered with ivory fondant. For the 'yarn' balls, I used the leftover cake mixed with buttercream icing, made them into a ball and covered with fondant.

The 'K' and straps are made from modeling chocolate. I used a Dixie cup to support the strap while it hardened and while transporting. The knitting needles are kabob sticks with fondant tops.

One great thing about this homemade knitting bag cake is that if there is any sagging it adds to the look of the bag. It took a while to make it from start to finish but was totally worth it. If you are interested in making this cake make sure you have time. The knitting balls take quite a while to do.
