Homemade Ladybug Birthday Cake

For my daughter's first birthday, I made her a Ladybug Birthday Cake. A smash cake just for her and one for the rest of the party goers. I had never made a birthday cake before so I was nervous.

I used 3 packages of store bought moist vanilla cake mix. I used round bowl Bakeware that is oven safe for the body and head. It took 3 bottles of red food coloring to get the shade of red that was appropriate. I had to run out to the store last minute to buy more, I didn't want a orange cake!

I used peppermint patties for the spots. A store bought tube of black icing for the head. The cake was a hit, everyone loved it. Plus I had fun making it, once I got over the stress of hoping it would turn out. I am looking forward to making her another cake next year!
