Homemade Ladybug Birthday Cake

This Ladybug Birthday Cake was a two piece, 3 dimensional cake.

I baked this cake in two different Pyrex bowls, one larger than the other. I have never made a cake in my life, so wasn't sure if I could do it. After a lot of research, I added a cup of sour cream to a box of yellow cake mix and just went for it! I put it in a large Pyrex bowl and baked it until my knife came out clean (about 45 minutes) and then let it cool completely and then I flipped it over, put it on a cookie sheet and stuck it in the freezer.

Additionally, I made the head out of chocolate cake mix and added jello instant pudding (I wasn't sure which would make it moister, yellow pudding or sour cream, so I tried both). I filled the "head" bowl and baked it. I used the remaining batter for cupcakes. I stuck this in the freezer as well.

I actually ordered my tinted frosting from the bakery at my local grocery store exactly tinted to my plates and other items.

I spread white butter cream to the frozen cake. I then drew my design in it and used a star shape and bag to do the decorating. It was so much easier than I had expected.

Finally, I attached the head to the body with two straws cut at angles to make them sharp and easy to push through the cake. I then stuck this all in the freezer again and took to the party the next day. I didn't worry about wrapping it all up and by the time the party was ready, cake was thawed.
