Coolest Ladybug Birthday Cake Design

My daughter was turning 4 and she wanted a Ladybug party. I found this website which gave me some ideas on how to make a Ladybug Birthday Cake Design. Here is what I did.

First, I made two separate cakes. I cooked the first in a 9 x 13 sheet pan. The other one I cooked in a medium sized glass Pyrex bowl. I was nervous about the bowl. I wasn’t sure how long it would take to cook. But when all was said and done, it only took about 5 minutes longer than the recipe said. I used a Classic Yellow Layer Cake recipe that I got from one of my books.

I made the cake two days ahead to be safe and to make sure it was cooled 100%. I wrapped it in plastic and put it in the refrigerator. Second came the decorating. I was going to use Fondant and was nervous about making it myself. While I was out shopping for decorations, I found Fondant By Duff. It was wonderful. Easy to use and the colors were extremely vibrant.

I made a basic buttercream frosting and covered my round cake. I rolled out a disc of red fondant and put that on top of the buttercream. Next, I cut out a half circle from my black fondant to make the face and used some white for the eyes. I then rolled out the black and used round (two different sizes) cookie cutters for the dots. I put a little frosting on each to help them stick.

For the bottom layer I used green food coloring to make the rest of my frosting look like grass. I covered the sheet cake with the green frosting and then used flower shaped cookie cutters to make the flowers. I stuck the smaller flowers in the larger with a little bit of frosting again to help them stick.

The final touch, were the antenna. Black Twizzlers with a ball of black Fondant on the end did the trick. I heated them up in the microwave so I could curl them a little bit.

The Cake was a huge hit. Thank you to this site and all the ladybug cakes that inspired me! I couldn’t have done it without you!
