Coolest Ladybug Cake

This is a ladybug cake I made for my niece’s birthday party. It was very fun to make. I took a Pyrex bowl and cooked the cake for the round ladybug. Then I made a base for it to sit on.

It was a 12 inch cake pan for the bottom. I covered the bottom and the red part of the ladybug with buttercream. I hand carved a leaf out of mm fondant. I also made small leaves for around the ladybug base to cover any bad spots. It gave it a really nice touch.

I made the spots, head, and legs with mm fondant. The head was a little difficult. I could have put a border around the bottom. I just forgot. Anyways, it’s supposed to be sitting on dirt so I guess I can get away with that.

I left a space for the name, but my sister just said to use the candle and not worry about the name. The white part of the face and dew drops were fondant too. I also put shimmer dust on the dirt part of the cake and the dew drops. You can’t really see that though.

  1. What a beautiful cake! Your ladybug looks fantastic, and your frosting and fondant look smooth and delicious. Thanks for the detailed directions: I can’t wait to try this one!

  2. This is great! I love the idea of just using an ordinary Pyrex bowl for the dome shape. I have not bought any special pans or tools yet. How much longer did you have to cook the dome?

  3. I just keep an eye on it. I stick shish kabob sticks in it instead of a knife. When it comes out clean, it’s done. It does take quite a bit longer, but also depends on your oven. It likes to burn on top too. I prevent that by putting foil on top of it when the top gets a thin crust…I wait for that because I don’t want the foil sticking to the cake. Hope that answers your question.
