Coolest Legend of Zelda Birthday Cake

My son has been having a great time playing Zelda games and he adamantly wanted a “Little boy Zelda cake” (For some reason he always calls Link little boy Zelda). So I asked exactly what he wanted and made plans a few weeks in advance so that it would be perfect. He said he wanted a sword, a shield, a treasure chest, bombs, and “monies!” So I had my work cut out for me. The base of the Legend of Zelda Birthday Cake is milk chocolate and covered in buttercream frosting.

The sword and shield took me quite a while to complete. Both are made entirely out of marshmallow fondant. Each piece was cut out with a clean exacto knife and all free-handed while I eyeballed a picture on my laptop. I was afraid I wasn’t going to be able to get all the intricate pieces to fit on the bottom of the shield, but I am still happy with out it turned out. Next time I do something like this I will figure out a way to make the shield more sturdy so it’s not just “sinking” over the sword part. All the shiny pieces are simply brushed with clear vanilla and Wilton pearl dust.

The treasure chest was covered in marbled marshmallow fondant. It wasn’t really the “wood grain” look I was after, but it works. All the “metal” accents were made the same way as the parts on the sword and shield with the Wilton pearl dust.

The rupees were just pictures I found on the internet and printed on heavy card stock. The bombs were solid fondant, but the base of the fuses were small marshmallows that I jammed the candles through. I ran out of fondant so I just set the rest of the candles in the grass.

All in all I am pretty happy with how this cake turned out, but most importantly the Birthday boy said it was the “super greatest” cake he ever saw, and that’s all that matters!

  2. Your son is/was only 3 years when you made it for him? I bet you he will appreciate it more when he grows up, because that cake is a-ma-zing!
