Homemade Legend of Zelda Cake
For this Legend of Zelda birthday cake, I made a 2 layer 8 1/2 inch cake and used buttercream icing on it. I started by looking online and deciding on the images that I wanted to use. I printed them out at the size I wanted them on the cake. I then traced the outline with a safety pin (though a tooth pic, or any other thin object would work as well here.)
After tracing them out, I used an artist's paintbrush to "paint" the designs on there while going by the printed pictures. I then outlined all the imaged in Wilton's black decorators icing. When dying the buttercream icing, I used the Wilton's gel icing for frosting so that it didn't leave a funny taste in it.
When I did the base coat of frosting on the cake, I smoothed it out by misting hot water over the surface, which allows the cake spatula to glide over the surface and get it really smooth. The only thing I would have done different is the border. I couldn't find my larger star tip, only my small one. It looks MUCH better with the border done with a larger tip. I think I might have used white icing on it instead of the green as well.
My husband and I are both HUGE Zelda fans and I made this for his birthday. It was a huge success! I do recommend making the cake a day before and refrigerating it overnight. This makes sure that it is cool, and also makes frosting it tons easier. GOOD LUCK!!
