Homemade Lightning McQueen Birthday Cake

Homemade Lightning McQueen Birthday Cake

I made this Lightning McQueen Birthday Cake for my little brother's birthday party. After I saw the Cars cakes on this site I started working on mine. I made 3 separate 1/2 sheet cakes and stacked them on top of each other with frosting in between. Then I cut out Lightning's shape with a serrated knife. After freezing it for 24 hours I frosted a layer of chocolate on and then started working with colored frosting.

It took me 5 containers of red food coloring to get it to look red enough for the car (with less than that the frosting just looked pink). After the chocolate frosting layer had frozen completely I started "dotting" the frosting onto the cake. I did this all by hand, using the little plastic Lightning McQueen as my model.

I changed the "Rust-eze" on the hood to my brother's name and the "95" on the top to his age, which fit better. I had a bit of trouble with the spoiler: it fell over and I had to rebuild it twice, which was really annoying.

That's awesome that you were able to do this all by hand.
