Homemade Lightning McQueen Cake

My son loves "Cars" so I wanted to make him a Lightning McQueen cake for his 3rd Birthday. I have never carved a cake and wanted to try my hand at it after viewing some of the pictures on here. (I've been decorating for awhile so this was a good challenge for me.)

The cake was made from a 12" round and I trimmed it down and used part of the sides as the top of the cake. I covered it in marshmallow fondant and used the Wilton sprays on the side lightning bolts.

For the "Rust-eze" logo I traced on wax paper placed on my son's toy car and used yellow candy melts. Once it had dried I peeled it off and was able to place it right on the car. The wheels are rice krispy treats cut out with a tiny cookie cutter and covered with black marshmallow fondant.

The cake board is a Masonite board covered in checked fabric that I had on hand, then covered in cellophane.

It was a hit and he loved it!
