Homemade Lightsaber Cake
I was asked to make a Star Wars cake for a friends daughters birthday. I got my inspiration from the other cakes on this site - thank you.
I made 2 oblong sponge cakes using the fabulous Lakeland multicake tin. I lay these in a line and trimmed to make the 'sabre' shape. I sliced them through the centre and filled with jam (jam was a specific request of the little girl).
I covered the cakes with buttericing before covering with blue fondant. The blue icing was made by adding coloured paste to white ready to roll fondant. The handle was covered in a similar way by adding a small amount of black paste to white icing to achieve a gray colour. I then painted this with edible silver paint to get a little bit of sparkle.
Licorice rolls were unrolled to make the black stripes- they were just stuck on with a little water. Sweets were stuck on with butter icing to make the 'buttons' and a row of edible silver balls to finish. The writing in the stars was a last minute addition to use up coloured fondant but it really Jazzed the cake up.
This homemade lightsaber cake was really heavy and just over 24inches long! My husband stuck 2 pieces of MDF together which I covered in foil to mount the cake, otherwise I don't now how I would have moved it. Really good fun to make!
