Little Mermaid Cake

This was my first non-rectangle cake. I was inspired by many similar cakes on the web.

My Little Mermaid cake took it's shape from a 10" round pan and an 8 Cup Pyrex measuring cup. After baking the cakes (350 for the round and 325 for the Pyrex)I first decorated the bottom half, the ocean. I used Wilton's buttercream frosting mix and tinted it myself. Around the base of the ocean, I sprinkled Domino's Brownulated sugar for sand. The rocks are chocolate and the seashells are candy. I piped out the starfish, seaweed and coral. I then made the schools of fish using fish sprinkles.

Before placing the rock in the ocean, I used a paper towel core to core out the center of the cake to accommodate Ariel. Before placing her in the cake, I wrapped her from the waist down in Saran Wrap. I placed her in the hole at a slight angle. Then I decorated the rock.

Being a novice myself, I can believe anyone can bake a cake like this.
