Coolest Luau Birthday Cake

For our granddaughter’s sixth birthday she wanted a luau party. Since her birthday is in December her parents had to be creative. They held an inside luau complete with grass skirts and leis for her and three of her friends.

Her Luau birthday cake was a 9×13 French vanilla sheet cake decorated in a beach scene. I used a butter cream icing tinted with brown. With a star tip (#20), I used an up and down motion to create a bamboo look. For sand I used brown sugar and spread it on half of the cake. For water I used piping gel tinted blue and spread on the other half of the cake.

I used a star tip (#22) and piped a scroll border around the top edges of the cake in a slightly darker brown. I made red tropical flowers with yellow centers and green leaves and placed them randomly on the cake. I also made a beach hut from a plastic container in which I cut a rounded opening and glued and taped toothpicks to it.

The slanted roof was also made of toothpicks and secured to the hut with florist putty. To complete the scene, I placed palm trees and colorful umbrellas on the cake and a hula girl beside the cake. Happy birthday was floating in the water in red.

Needless to say, the luau was a success!
