Homemade Mario Bros One Up Cake

Homemade Mario Bros One Up Cake

My son wanted a Mario party for his 8th Birthday. He had his heart set on a Mario one up (Mushroom) cake. This Mario Bros One Up Cake is what I came up with.

I baked the cake in a Pampered Chef batter bowl to create the mushroom shape of the cake. For the stem, I made Rice Krispie Treats. I think if I were to do this again, I would either bake them a day in advance so they would be harder or just use a non edible "stem." I then made butter cream icing and a Marshmallow Fondant icing (green and white).

To assemble the cake I shaped the rice krispie treats into a small circle for the stem. I used a small dowel to secure it together. Then I put buttercream icing and then wrapped in fondant. I then placed the cake on cardboard cake holder and put it on top of the rice krispie treat. I then put the buttercream icing on and topped with the rolled out green fondant. Then I cut small circles out of my white fondant to put them around the cake. Added smaller circle eyes and a smile.

To make the stem tan, I used a small paint brush and put on some colored sugar crystals. I was told that the one up should not have a mouth, but I told my son he was just happy to be at his party.

For an added effect I placed a Mario and Luigi figure on top of the one up.
