Homemade Mario Brothers Birthday Cake
My son was turning 5 and asked for his first 'big boy' party. He's really into videogames so he asked for a Mario Bros. Party. So this Mario Brothers Birthday Cake is what hubby and I came up with!
It's 2 layers of Duncan Hines cake mixes done in a 9" pan with a chocolate buttercream filling. I was a bit rushed for time so I bought pre-colored fondant at a local craft store for the base of the cake and then hand dyed the smaller pieces of fondant for the details (thanks to hubby for his awesome work with an exacto-knife!).
To make the #5 on top we printed out a five stencil the size of the cake and then laid a sheet of wax paper on top. Next we took black icing and traced the '5', after that we stuck the icing in the freezer for a few hours until it hardened. Then we just peeled it off the wax paper like one big piece of chocolate and used some dabs of icing to glue it onto the cake. The small Mario characters were purchased from Ebay to finish it up!
