Homemade Mario Cake

After getting inspiration from this website I felt able to make my own Mario cake for a friend's son. I made an 8 inch chocolate marble Madeira sponge for the face and then a small cake in a loaf tin to cut out the ears. When making a circular Madeira it is really important to make a well in the center so that the cake doesn't rise as a big dome.

I then crumb coated the whole cake with butter icing and left to harden for an hour. The cake is covered in ready-roll fondant icing, approve 1kg coloured with peach for the whole face (large oval piece for nose) and then a total of another 500g colour with dark brown for eyebrows, sideburns and moustache, red for cap, white, black and navy for eyes and white and red for mouth.

I used a really brilliant Pampered Chef roller for the icing, it does it really evenly.
