Homemade Millennium Falcon Birthday Cake
This Homemade Millennium Falcon Birthday Cake was time consuming but really pretty easy! Bake a 10 in round and a 12 in square cake using 2-boxed mixes per cake. Let cakes completely cool before you start carving (I have even had good experiences freezing before carving).
Leaving the dome on the cake add desired cake filling approx 1 inch lower than the middle layer leaving room to carve away without cutting into filling. After assembly and carving is finished crumb coat the whole thing and let it sit until the crumb coat is hard 6 hours or more at least (overnight). Frost with gray icing and decorate!
I always keep a pan of nearly boiling water on hand to keep metal cake spatulas hot in a Pyrex measuring cup. I know I need to change the water out when my metal spatula sticks rather than slides and I use two or three in the water so there is always a hot spatula ready. This gives the cake a smoother appearance for my need. I did not detail authentically, just free hand metal panels and pipes and rivets. The black detail on the cake is purchased fondant. The fondant is molded and assembled then it dries.
My radar/satellite is a bit droopy, but is held on by a toothpick skewer. The rear engine is a blue sparkly gel that I found has to be a very thin layer after the gray frosting is set. I had a couple do-overs because I tried to add gel when frosting was wet.
