Coolest Monkey Cake

Ever since my little boy was born, we called him our “Lil’ Monkey” so when his 1st birthday came around, I wanted to do something monkey themed. I didn’t like the jungle ideas so, while looking for other things monkey related, I came across this website and another sock monkey cake. I had my theme!

This cake took two cake mixes, one for the head and one for the ears. A little tip: Though cake mixes say to use oil and water, if you use the same amount of milk (instead of water) and butter (instead of oil), the cakes will come out more moist and rich. I used a 12 inch round cake pans for the head and for the ears but I cut out the ear shape and used the extra cake for Toby’s smash cake. (A banana…it didn’t turn out well as I ran out of frosting.)

Both cakes were cut in half with Cream Cheese Frosting in between the layers. The white frosting was Cream Cheese Frosting, from a can, and the chocolate was Chocolate Fudge. The black outline was black gel icing. Unfortunately, I grabbed the wrong kind of red frosting. I thought I had grabbed cake and I grabbed cookie, so the mouth was runny. While this cake turned out OK, I would have done things a little differently.

I think I would have made the head smaller and I would have made my own chocolate frosting so the chocolate would have been lighter. I would have use red cake frosting so the lips didn’t run, and I would have given myself more time so I wasn’t rushing.
