Homemade Monkey Cake

I made a two layer 9" banana cake from a box mix and frosted it with a thin layer of buttercream frosting for this Monkey Cake. I then decorated it with a marshmallow fondant I made from a recipe I found on Wilton's cake website.

I colored the fondant for the cake, the monkey, the coconuts, bananas and palm trees using gel dyes, used a cookie cutter for the trees and shaped the monkey, coconuts and bananas by hand. It was relatively simple to put together, not too time consuming (once I got the fondant down). It was definitely worth taking the time to making the fondant at home. It is sweet and soft enough to be edible, unlike professional fondants, and a big hit with the kids.

I also made a small individual cake, frosted with buttercream and decorated with coconut flakes and a palm tree cutout and to give to my daughter to dig into since this was the cake I made for her first birthday.

My daughter chose this cake
by: Megan

My daughter wants a monkey theme for her 5th birthday party and, therefore, a monkey cake. Out of all the pictures, she chose this one. I hope I can do it justice!
