Homemade Monopoly Cake

I was asked to make this monopoly cake for a friend's Class party (she's a teacher).
I made the cake using yellow cake mix (2 boxes) in the medium size square pan and all buttercream icing. The buttercream used to pipe the decoration needed to be slightly stiffer than the buttercream used to cover the cake.

I iced the entire cake in white first, and then used a toothpick to "sketch" the board and squares in order for it to be even and symmetrical.

Then I proceeded by filling in each of the colors. I tried to complete anything in one color first (it helped to eliminate having to switch the icing bags over and over and in addition, I didn't have enough of the decorating tips I needed, so I had to wash and re-use the tips for each color).

I piped outlines in black after all of the colors were done so that there would be nice clean lines.
If you examine closely, I had to leave a few squares out on each side, but I tried to eliminate only the 3rd color from each group so it wouldn't be as noticeable.

I also made mini-muffin/cupcakes for the different game board pieces.

The cake was a big success!
