Monster Book Cake

Monster Book Cake

My son wanted a Harry Potter cake for his birthday, So I decided that the monster book of monsters would be fairly easy. It was, I just made a sheet cake, then I cut it in half and stacked it to make a double layer cake.

First I did a buttercream/crumb coat. The frosting was a chocolate fondant, super easy way to make your own frosting. You just use the chocolate candies for melting (you get them at Michael's or any craft store in the candy making isle). Get whatever color you want, they come in lots of colors. I used a little brown chocolate and white chocolate. So you melt the whole bag of chocolate in a double boiler, then you stir in 1/3 cup of Karo syrup. It turns into like play dough.

Let it cool enough to handle it, and then squeeze it till all the oil is out, this takes a little while and is messy, place on tin foil and let set for 12 hours. Then roll and use like regular fondant. Taste very yummy.

So for the cake I wrapped the sides with white fondant, added creases to make look like pages, I put a small strip of brown around bottom edge on platter, and cut into points, then I draped the back side and top with brown fondant. Cut edges into points. I added texture to top, I then rolled a piece of fondant to make the bump behind the eyes, and made eyeballs. I used the brown fondant with a little red paste color to make the gums, and rolled white to make teeth.

I used Wilton cookie frosting that comes in a tube to write on the top. My son loved it.

Thank you so much for the tip on how to make my own fondant! I know using it can add a whole new element to your cake, but I didn't know how to make it, or the fact that you could make your own! I thought it was for the big bakeries only. Thanks again and I can't wait to try it!!!
