Coolest Monster Truck Cake

I made this monster truck cake for my son’s fourth birthday. I thought I was going to have to carve out the entire truck, but then saw that Wilton made a 1980 truck cake pan.

I made the cake and then just carved out the wheels so that I could make monster truck sized ones. For the actual design on the side of the truck, my husband drew out a sketch for me to go by.

I baked two six inch round cakes for the wheels and then decorated them in chocolate buttercream icing tinted black. I frosted the inside of the wheels white and added a green hubcap. Then to finish the tires I added some tread using tip #5. I used black licorice ropes to connect the wheels and the cab.

To finish the remainder of the cake, I started by outlining the entire truck. I frosted the white cab and windows and added black roll bars. I then frosted the front and back bumpers in grey. Before filling in the remainder of the cake, I added the lightning bolt, back tail light, head light, and number 4. Finally, I simply filled in the rest with green stars using tip #16.

Needless to say my son absolutely loved it and it was a big hit at his “Monster Jam” birthday party.

  3. This cake is awesome. This is an old Wilton mold. I’m looking for a copy of the instructions that came with the cake originally. Do you happen to have a copy? If you do or know where I could get them please send me an email. chrissy@m-techs.com

  4. Thanks everyone for your very nice comments. It took a total of two cake mixes. One for the truck cake pan and one for the two round cake pans.

  6. Hi there. I am going to attempt to make this awesome cake for my son’s 3rd birthday. What did you use to tint the icing? Did you make icing from scratch? I’m looking for the easiest and fastest way to make this as I have an 8 month old too and my time and attention are always up for grabs! My son also has an allergy to peanuts so I have to be careful about what I use to tint the icing. Thanks in advance!!!
