Homemade My Little Pony Cake

For my daughter's 4th birthday, she was having a My Little Pony theme. She requested a cake that looked like a pink pony with purple hair. My mom found a horse cake design in Family Fun magazine, and I modified it to be a My Little Pony Cake.

I baked 2 boxes of mix in a 12x16 pan. After cooling the cake, I put it on a big sheet of cardboard covered with tin foil. I then cut a notch out of the bottom to use for the ear. I placed that notch up on the top and then trimmed cake from the sides to make the shape of the pony's head.

I tinted icing with food coloring to make the icing pink. I iced the cake all over, except for the eye area. I modeled the eye after one of my daughter's ponies. I used Cake Mate black squeezable icing and a writing tip to outline the eye. I then added some icing that I tinted blue and some more white. I used a toothpick to help the icing meet without running into the other colors.

I used the same black icing to make the nostril and mouth and to outline the ear. For the mane, I used squeezable icing packets in purple, pink, and white. I ran the icing in thick stripes from the cake board and up over the top to look like hair.
