Coolest New Year’s Cake

I really wanted to make a cool cake for New Year’s. It took me a long time to figure out what I wanted to do. Then I came up with the idea of making a cake of the ball dropping.

I made 1 square cake and 1 round cake. I split the square cake into quarters and stacked them together. I frosted all the cake with some homemade butter cream frosting and I used rice krispie treats to make the ball and I used a skewer and a wooden spoon to hold up the ball.

Then I covered the whole cake in marshmallow fondant I made. I had to look up pictures of the ball because I wasn’t sure exactly what it looked like. So I made a bunch of colored triangles and put them on the ball. It didn’t come out like I wanted it to because I wasn’t able to make all the triangles the same size.

I then piped on the Happy New Year’s 2012 with frosting and the swirls too. This New Year’s cake came out a lot better than I thought it would, being that it was only my 3rd cake using fondant, but I think I’m getting better at it.
