Coolest Number 5 Race Track Cake

My son wanted a Cars theme for his birthday and I was a bit apprehensive about fashioning a Lightning McQueen, so we compromised. I made him a “race track” in the shape of a 5 and then added his Cars figures that he already had. I just used box cake mix and white frosting colored with Wilton icing dyes.

To make the 5, I made a 8×8 square and an 8-inch round. I then cut the center out of the round and cut off an additional 1/4 of the ring to make the bottom of the 5. For the top, I cut about a 5×5 inch square out and used the remaining piece to make the top part of the 5.

I then iced the sides green for the “grass” and iced the top black. I piped yellow icing to make the road and my husband helped me make start and finish signs along with checkered flags, which I scotch taped to toothpicks. Then (after carefully washing them), I added the matchbox cars. My son loved his homemade Number 5 race track cake!
