Cool Homemade 3-Tier Ocean Scene Birthday Cake

I decorated this Ocean Birthday Cake Design with the help of my new Cricut Cake Expression. I also handmade some of the decorations, like the octopus, seaweed and sea anemone. It was my first cake, so it was a bit of a challenge. I learned a lot about how to use Wilton gum paste and fondant. Gum paste is what I used to make all of the decorations and fondant was rolled out to cover the cake. I found gum paste to be very forgiving. If I didn’t like a character I would rewarm it in the microwave and start over.

The legs on the octopus were heavy, so I dried it over a container and supported the legs during the drying process before topping the cake. To keep the layers of cake in place, I used a dowel through the entire 3 layers. Brown sugar was used for the sand. I entered the fair with this cake and was awarded Judges favorite and 2nd place.

  1. This is a BEAUTIFUL cake. When I read that is was your 1st cake my jaw dropped. If this was your first cake I can’t even begin to imagine what your fifth cake will look like! Great job.
