Homemade Octopus Cake

For my son's 1st birthday we decided to go with an ocean theme. I wanted to start a tradition of making fun and original homemade cakes for my kids. We have a rather large family so we needed a cake that would feed at least 25 people. I thought cupcakes would also be an easy way to serve the cake so less cake cutting was involved.

After looking through many pictures of ocean themed cakes on this site, I pulled together many different ideas and made this fun Octopus cake. I covered an over sized baking pan with blue paper for the background. Using chocolate cake batter, I baked the body of the Octopus in a Pyrex bowl and inverted it onto the baking sheet.

For the legs I made two pans of mini cupcakes. I used butter cream frosting which I colored a bright coral color. This cake was pretty easy to make and we had a lot of fun with it! The mini cupcakes just happened to be the perfect size for a 1 year old to easily eat! Hope you enjoy this fun and easy cake.
