Coolest Picnic Table Cake

I made this picnic table cake for a family camping weekend after seeing similar cakes on this site and other websites. It was my first attempt at this kind of cake.

It is a 10″ square cake with chocolate frosting. The picnic blanket is marshmallow fondant – two colors cut into squares and made into a checkerboard pattern. The plates, dill pickles, watermelon and lettuce is made using a jolly rancher type chewy fruit candy.

The hamburger buns are Nilla cookies. Grill marks were added using black piping gel and cocoa. I also used that trick on the bacon slices which were made using caramel squares flattened and sliced into strips. Caramel squares were also molded for the chicken drumsticks (coated with chocolate icing and rolled in cereal crumbs). The worms were also caramel squares.

Ketchup and mustard was just colored icing and the relish was green icing mixed with sugar to give it a more chunky appearance. The cheese on the burger was white chocolate colored orange. The potato chips were also white chocolate with cocoa and finely grated cookie crumbs.

The ant hill was iced leftover cake pieces with crumbled cookie crumbs and cocoa. Ants, caterpillar and the fly on the burger were mini m&ms. Wings on the fly were small flattened pieces of caramel square.

The cake was a big hit at our family event and I’m sure they will all be requesting similar cakes at all our get-togethers from now on.
