Coolest Pirate Island Cake

I made this pirate island cake for my son’s pirate themed party. The cupcake cakes work great for kids, because you still get the fun effect of a whole cake, but have the convenience of handing out cupcakes to the kids. No need to cut or use forks, just break them off, and hand out! The kids love it.

I made a cupcake cake with 24 chocolate cupcakes and copied the design concept from a cake I saw on this site, Treasure Island Pirate Birthday Cakes #04, submitted by John and Toni F. Allons. They have some helpful decorating ideas on their description I used.

I used the Wilton Buttercream icing recipe, and for the land portion I added a small amount of cocoa baking powder and milk (for 1 1/2 cups of icing I added 1/3 cup cocoa baking powder and 1 TBS. milk) to make a light brown color with a light chocolate flavor. I topped this with brown sugar for sand. To make the breakers in the waves I used a writing tip and made loopy designs with it. I found the toppers in the toy section at the Dollar Tree store.
