Homemade Pirate Ship 5th Birthday Cake

Homemade Pirate Ship 5th Birthday Cake

I made this Pirate Ship 5th Birthday Cake for my son's birthday. The bottom of the cake (ocean) is a 12x18 cake pan with store bought cake mix and tub icing tinted blue. The ship is from a 11x15 cake pan using buttercream icing tinted brown. The ship is cut from the 11x15 pan and the remaining pieces stacked on the front and end of ship to give it the shape.

I ran a toothpick through the icing to give the look of wood planks. The pirates were bought from Party City. The wooden anchor and wooden sticks are from Michael's Arts and Craft store. The sails are cut from parchment paper with skulls I found on the internet printed/cut out/and glued to the front. I then burned the edges of each sail with a candle.

The string is regular kitchen string (found in the hardware dept of Wall Mart). The cannon balls are malted milk balls, the gold loot is Rollos, Hershey bars and play gold coins. Rolos were also used on the sides of side. The edges are store bought cookie sticks.

I had a lot of fun doing this cake. It really was easy once I got started. I didn't use any support between the ocean cake and the ship because I made this the day of party. If you have to travel with cake or make it a few days in advance then I would use support for sure. All I used with a skewer in the front and back of ship to hold the pieces together.
