Coolest Pirate Ship Cake

We made this cake using multiple 9 inch round pans and stacking them at varying heights to make the ship. We froze each piece to make them sturdier to work with when we started to frost. We used the darkest Duncan Hines icing we could find for the main cake color. We also used dowell rods of various sizes for the masts and the ladder and fence. An ice cream cone was used for the birds nest (glue gun). Rollo candy and round milk balls were used for the barrels and cannon balls and I can’t recall what we used for the actual cannons (some kind of rolled candy). We found a good ‘jolly roger’ photo and downloaded on regular computer paper. We made the birthday flag and glue gunned it on. Covered some particle board with contact paper (it comes in many colors) and used blue cotton candy (from walmart) for the waves and black construction paper for the cutouts. We had the figurines/treasure chest from a toy pirate ship we owned and just added some gold chocolate coins. My husband piped on the yellow and red detail and used four nails taped together to drag over all the cake to give the ‘appearance of wood planks’ and made the planks varying sizes. We found the candles at one of the party stores. This was definitely time intensive but our son just LOVED it!!
